In each case, research started with a name from the Rolls of Honour or from informal notes in the back of an old Admission Register (there are no similar references known to exist in the Westoe archives).
Each name was then checked against school archives, and the additional details led to searches of public archive resources (such as military records, newspapers, censuses, birth/death/marriage records and so on). The information then allowed personal histories to be built up, although I deliberately wanted to try to keep the tone of these histories personal, and so some details (particularly military minutiae) have been deliberately left out.
In keeping with basic genealogical principles, I have used only primary or contemporary sources in almost all cases. And I have only including details where it has been possible to confirm that the details really do apply to the Old Boy who attended one of the schools (using matching birth dates or family details, for instance). In some cases that confirmation is only circumstantial but these details have still been included but, as a caution, they have been marked with in the list below, and in the mini-biographies with a caveat.
Unfortunately, not all names have been traced, often because there are multiple possible candidates. As this continues to be a work in progress, I hope to include more as resources allow.
This has been very much a private, independent and self-funded project, started in 2007 but which gathered pace in more recent months. As the project was moving beyond data gathering to the design of the software to create the pages, I learned of other projects, the main one being the funded North East War Memorials Project (NEWMP). As a result there has been some information exchange with Peter Hoy of the NEWMP, particularly as I have access to school records. I'm grateful for his help.
The list below contains 285 boys and staff, with the 118 who lost their lives marked with a , and there are links to 180 mini biographies.
The list was last updated 08-Apr-2016.
