Hubert Wylie, was the son of Hubert Wylie, who ran a slater company, and his wife Margaret, and also the nephew of William Gladstone Wylie, Mayor of South Shields 1907-08.

He joined the High School from Westoe Road Elementary at the age of 12 on a Corporation Scholarship, and was later joined by his brother, William.

His academic record at the school was outstanding, resulting in distinctions in History, Religious Knowledge, English and Latin. He was also an editor The Atom, the school magazine.

At the age of 19 he left with a scholarship to Merton College, Oxford, with additional scholarship funding from South Shields Council.

He joined up on 3-Jul-1915 with the South Wales Borderers, and later with the Welsh Regiment.

Hubert served in France, Palestine and Egypt, suffering a number of injuries trhough his military career. In Apr-1916 he injured his arm in an accident during bomb-throwing practice, and had a further bomb-related injury in September that year. While fighting in the Somme in Jan-1917 he suffered an injury to his knee, and in Palestine in Mar-1918 suffered abdominal injuries.

He was awarded the Military Cross for distinguished conduct in the field.

After the war, Hubert went on to Marlborough College, in Wiltshire, where he became a very inspirational history teacher and housemaster. He was also editor of the Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Magazine until 1956.

He died in Richmond, Yorshire, aged 70.
