From its foundation in 1886, the Boys' High School evolved through
its merger with Westoe Higher Grade School, and its redesignation
as South Shields Grammar Technical School for Boys, to become Harton
Comprehensive. It then became Harton Technology School, reflecting
its technology specialism, and is now caleld Harton Technology College,
although it is still a secondary school.
Although some parts of the buildings have changed little, others have
changed extensively. The needs of a growing school, the introduction of
girls, the withdrawal of the Sixth Form, the needs of a Technology College,
and changing regulations, have all had an affect in one way or another.
But underneath, at least from my own personal, but limited, experience,
the school retains much of the old atmosphere.
