WYLIE, William Stanley

William Stanley Wylie was the son of marine engineer, Edward Wylie, and his wife, Amy. William joined the High School at the age of 12, and left in December, 1906. IN September, 1907, he joined Westoe Secondary School as a pupil-teacher, leaving in 1909 at the age of 18 to go to Arsmtrong Teacher's College in Newcastle. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant (later as Lieutenant) with the 3rd Battalion of the Yorkshire & Lancaster Regiment. While attached to the 1st Battalion he was in action in Belgium in May 1915, and went missing near the town of Hooge. He was later reported as killed, having died of his wounds. There is a memorial to him at the the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, a memorial to those whose bodies were never found. |
