PAYNE, James Wiliam

James William Payne's father was also James William Payne, born in North Shields and a house builder. His mother was Francis Mary Payne. James joined Westoe Secondary School from Mortimer Road Juniors in July, 1905, at the age of 12 and stayed until July, 1911, ending his time there as a pupil-teacher. On leaving, he went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He signed up with the 6th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry, and was killed in action at the age of 24. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial, about 70 miles south-east of Calais. |
