CRESSWELL, Corbett
There is no direct evidence that the details here refer to the same Corbett Cresswell who went to Westoe Secondary School, but the relatively unusual name suggests that it is likely. Corbett Cresswell was the son of Wonford Cresswell, Marine Engineer, and his wife Charlotte, It is not known when he attended Westoe Secondary School although, on leaving school he became an apprentice engineer. He served with the Merchant Navy on board the steam tanker, SS "Arca" and, on 2-Oct-1918, while sailing north-west of Ireland, came under attack by a German U-board. She was torpedoed, and Corbett was one of those who was killed. His name is on the Tower Hill Mercantile Memorial, near the Tower of London. |
