After leaving school, he studied for his BA in Modern History (with Economics, French and Latin as subsidary subjects) at King's College, Newcastle, which he gained in 1948. He did a further year at King's for his Diploma in Education.

His first teaching post was Redwell County Secondary School, which he joined in September, 1951. Three years later, in 1954 he joined the teaching staff of South Shields Grammar-Technical School for Boys, leaving in 1960 to a position as Senior House Master at Kenton Comprehensive School in Newcastle.
