Roland Bainbridge originally attended Stanhope Road elementary school, and joined the Boys High School on a Corporation Scholarship at the age of 11.

He was the son of William (rate collector and assistant overseer with the council) and Elizabeth Bainbridge.

He left, aged 16, and joined Westoe Secondary School as a pupil-teacher, which explains why he appears on both Rolls of Honour.

He served with the 16th (Public Schools) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (the Middlesex) Regiment, and was missing, presumed killed in action at the Somme on 1-Jul-1916.

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, near Albert in the Somme region of France.
